Organizing and Cleaning Your Children’s Toys

Any parent will tell you that keeping a playroom organized and relatively germ free is a near impossible chore. Parents will try anything to keep an organized and clean space short of putting up barricades. The fact of the matter is that most children have no sense of order or thoughts on cleanliness. They are kids after all! These tips will help you maintain some semblance of organization as well as clean toys to keep your kids playing and germ free.

Get on your child’s level: Perhaps the reason your child’s playroom is in a constant state of disorder is because shelves and storage units are simply out of reach or difficult to operate for your little one. Take a look at the playroom from your child’s eye level, and see what they see when they are trying to put toys away. Invest is floor-level containers for the toys and be sure to leave the lids off. Create shelving units that are only one or two shelves high for easy access and organization.

 
Go transparent: Choose storage bins that are clear so your kids can see what exactly is in each container. This will likely keep them from pulling out all their toys in a frantic search for that one, special doll or monster truck.
 
Label it: Label shelves and containers with their exact contents to ease children’s frustrations when they are searching for their toys.
 
Now that you have your child’s playroom organized it is time to keep those toys sanitary for years of use.
 
Hard, plastic toys can be cleaned with a mild bleach solution. You should wash them with soap and water first to remove any grime and dirt build up. Do not overdo it on the bleach as a small amount will go far. Add one tablespoon of bleach to each gallon of water used. Soak the toy in the solution for 10 to 20 minutes to disinfect it, and rinse the toy well. You can also run some toys through the dishwasher. This will eliminate the need for the bleach solution. Throw stuffed or cloth toys in your washer and dryer at least once a week to prevent germs. And, don’t forget to wipe down play surfaces on a regular basis. Tables, chairs, and walls can be disinfected using the same bleach solution as mentioned earlier.
